My art is a reflection of the deep emotions and vivid memories of my life, capturing the essence of love, loss, and the enduring connections that continue to resonate in my life.
This past weekend, I set up my booth at the First Saturday Outdoor Art Fair, hosted by DeGallery in Bryan, Texas. It turned into a beautiful, sun-filled day—one of those rare February afternoons that makes you forget winter entirely. I spent the day sharing my work, drawing live, and chatting with art lovers, fellow vendors, and friends.
One of the highlights of the event was having my grandson, Benjamin, with me. He was absolutely thrilled to take part in the kid’s Valentine’s Day art activities, where he met several other children and got creative. He also made his rounds, as he always does, chatting with the other vendors and artists—who were just as delighted to speak with him! Texas artists and creators have such a warm and welcoming spirit, and it was wonderful to see Benjamin soak up that sense of community.
Drawing with Benjamin is such a joy! He sits beside me and paints quietly. It's a delight to watch him stir his paint colors together, as he gives me an accurate lecture on how to create secondary colors, what colors to use, and how to keep the colors true in every shade. He listens so well and loves to repeat my lessons back to me. We enjoy spending time together this way, with me painting beside him while he works on whatever he wants to create.
Nineteen seventy-five was my first year away from home, after transferring to Washington State University from the University of Washington's Seattle campus, where I'd been going to school close to home.
I was looking forward to a new environment in Pullman, meeting new friends, and bringing my horse with me. Seraphim was a dark chestnut, Anglo-Arabian gelding my Dad purchased for me when I was eleven years old. I was looking forward to drawing and painting classes, and taking dressage lessons with my horse over the coming summer.
The sun has finally returned to the Pacific Northwest, drawing families to the beaches and waterways of Washington. As I listen to the news of recent swimming accidents, I'm reminded of a summer when I tragically lost my family on the water.
When my husband, Phil, brought home a memo from work, the Owner of the company was seeking help in the home office during upcoming staff vacations. Was I interested? "If I could work in downtown Seattle again for a couple of weeks, sure!"
